Ruins, Churches and Museums of Sozopol
Ancient Town Apolonia was a well fortified town. There was a tall fortress wall, about 8-12 meters high around that town.
Since that time the Southern Fortress Wall has survived the best.
Along this wall there's a picturesque cobbled alley and you can enjoy walking here, gaze The Wall and the beautiful sights of the sea.
The museum "The Southern Fortress Wall" is located here and inside this museum there's an antique well and a grain silo.
There's also The Western Fortress Wall which is well remained. Nearby there're the Church of St Kirill and Methodius, the remains of the medieval church and Roman thermae. Here you can see one of the authentic streets of Ancient Appolonia.
The main church of the Town is the Church of Saint George. It's located in the centre of the Old Town and more often religious services are held in this very place. This Church was restored 15 years ago.
Right on the main square in the Old Town there's the Church of Saint Kirill and Methodius. It is the first Bulgarian Church in the Town. It was built 100 years ago, and was completely restored 7 years ago.
In the summer there you can see the holi relics of St John the Baptizer which were found on the island of St Ivan (John).
In the big part near the sea in the Old Town there's the Church of Saint Zosim. It's a cosy nice church which was built almost 200 years ago.
The oldest church survived in the Town is the Church of the Most Holy Mother. It was built in the 16th century and has kept its beauty and the construction style of the churches during Ottoman slavery.
There are also more than 16 small churches in Sozopol which are called Paraclesis.
Archeological Museum in Sozopol attracts the special interest. Here you can see numerous artefacts of Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Bulgarian stages of Sozopol.
On the island of Saint Ivan near Sozopol there are the ruins of the biggest monastery on the Bulgarian coastline which are named after Saint John. Firstly it was ruined in 15th century when the Turks invaded the Town. And finally it was looted and devastated by Black Sea pirates in the 17th century.
In 2008 the relics of the Saint John were discovered during the archeological excavations and now they are in the Church of Saint Kirill and Methodius. And now any religious person has an opportunity to bow down to them.
